What to Expect

Once you are accepted into Gateway's program, you will be assigned an employment specialist. This person will be able to support you in many ways. Together, you will create a resume and practice interviewing for jobs. They may set up job assessment (s) to see what types of jobs suit you best with your level of skill and ability. After determining the best type of job for you, they will help you search for a job (job development) and give you job leads. Your employment specialist or job coach will guide you through the rest of the employment process. This may include accompanying you to the interview. Once hired by the employer, your job coach will provide on-the-job training at the job site. The job coach will work one on one with you until you can complete the job on your own. When you can satisfactorily complete the job independently the job coach will gradually decrease the amount of direct coaching time they spend with you at the job site. The job coach will continually provide you with needed follow-up support to help you maintain employment.

How does it work?
At Gateway, we do not have a pool of employers with job openings. Rather, we conduct individualized job searches based on our applicants interests and skills. We include other factors in our search such as geographic area, schedule, and transportation availability. Our goal is to find you a job where you will succeed and be able to contribute.

After potential employment sites are found, your employment specialist will try to setup interviews. They will assist you throughout the whole process from interviewing to actual on the job training. After you are hired, your specialist will help train you for the job and all the responsibilities that come with it.When they feel you can handle the job on your own, they will follow up with periodic visits to evaluate your progress and help with any issues you may be facing.
